Mapping Police Violence, a 501(c)(3) organization that “publishes the most comprehensive and up-to-date data on police violence in America to support transformative change,” has released its most recent report.
Findings include that Black people are three times as likely as white people to be killed by police, and that more than 98 percent of killings by police from 2021 to 2023 have not resulted in officers being charged with a crime.
From a systemic perspective:
Most killings by police begin with traffic stops, mental health checks, disturbances, non-violent offenses and where no crime has been alleged.
Removing tasks like mental health checks from cops’ list of duties will save lives.
